Find Your Direction With A Personal Vision Statement

Image
Being in your twenties and thirties as a quarterlifer is an exciting time full of transitions, firsts, and, of course, plenty of questions and unknowns. For many millennials, the questions and unknowns overtake and drown out the excitement, leading to feelings of being lost and having no direction. A great first step toward finding your way is to create a personal vision statement. From that basic, but critical first step, you can build the life YOU want. Moving forward without one is a lot like trying to get somewhere you have never been without Google Maps or WAZE. Moving forward WITH one can improve happiness for millennials. A vision statement should capture your values, goals and priorities for your life. Refer back to it, edit it as needed over time, and rely on it to stay focused on what really matters to you. Use this as a tool to guide your choices about romance, friendship, family, and career. How do you begin? You must think about the life that YOU want, NOT the life that ot...

Black Lives Matter

Image
We at the Quarterlife Center are deeply saddened and angered by the recent killing of George Floyd, and our thoughts are with his loved ones. As therapists, we provide care for clients’ mental health as they work to achieve positive change. Therapists have an ethical duty to provide a safe, nonjudgmental space, as clients shine a light on their dark places, get curious about those places, and explore their vulnerability. We need more than momentary actions to effect change. We need ongoing, thoughtful and honest conversations. Yes, it’s messy, complicated, and imperfect. Real conversations about race are essential for making positive change for individuals, families, communities, and our country as a whole. Let’s work together to examine and hold ourselves and others accountable for individual biases, microaggressions, and systemic racism. We are providing the following resources with the hope that you will use them as a way to reflect on your own biases and to open up dialogue with pe...

5 Things You Should Talk About in Therapy

Image
If you’re new to therapy, you probably have some questions about how it works. One of the  most common questions   we get at QLC is “what should I talk about in therapy?”  Here are 5 helpful ideas to get you started. 1. Talk about how you decided to begin therapy. Did something happen recently that led you to seek counseling? What have you been struggling with? Have you been thinking about doing this for a long time? Did a friend or family member encourage you to begin therapy?) 2. Share your feelings about beginning therapy. Are you excited, nervous, ambivalent, angry, distracted? How does your body feel? Are you thirsty, hungry, tense? 3. Share how you feel now that you’ve arrived to your counseling session. Were you stressed out trying to find the office? Did you arrive on time? Where you rushed? Is the appointment how you thought it would be? Are you feeling more nervous or less nervous now that you’re there? Are you physically comfortable in the office? Do you feel n...
